ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Sophomore
Jordan Boze (2-0) was strong in his first start of the year, leading the fifth-ranked Captains past St. Mary's College (Md.), 8-2, on Wednesday. Boze pitched five solid innings and the Captains offense stroked 15 hits for the fifth time this season.
The Captains improved to 11-2-1 overall this season, dropping the Seahawks to 3-3 through their first six games.
Boze gave up just a pair of singles in five innings of work, and struck out a career-high seven. He retired eight straight batters before coming out before the sixth inning. The sophomore faced just two batters over the minimum before giving way to the bullpen.
The CNU offense scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
Jacob Houston drove in a pair with a double to right field in the fourth, while
Justin Weaver singled in a pair in the fifth.
Billy Steel scored in both innings for CNU before driving in a run of his own in the seventh, doubling home
Scott Halsey.
The Seahawks got on the board in the seventh inning when Zach Nadolny hit a two run home run. Seniors
Matt Verdillo and
Ryan Fleischmann would close out the win for CNU, pitching the eighth and ninth, respectively. Verdillo struck out a pair and Fleischmann struck out the side in the ninth.
Three Captains finished with multi-hit efforts, led by Weaver going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Steel was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs, while
Christopher McDougal added a 2-for-4 effort.
CNU returns home this weekend to face Methodist University in a three-game conference series. The Captains are in first place in the league standings while the Monarchs are 7-6 overall, 4-5 against the USA South.
