NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After being ranked as high as sixth nationally in the preseason collegiate polls, Christopher Newport University baseball is up to No. 5 in the D3baseball.com Top 25 in the first regular season ranking. The Captains have raced out to a 10-2-1 start, leading the nation in wins and taking a two-and-a-half game lead in the USA South standings. CNU is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to St. Mary's College (Md.) for a 2:00 pm first pitch.
Christopher Newport has been led by a steady staff of pitching that has posted a 2.90 ERA through the first 13 games. The Captains pitching staff has struck out 144 batters in 115 innings so far this season. Offensively, CNU has stroked 32 doubles and are hitting .298 as a team. Newcomer
Justin Weaver is leading the attack, hitting .383 with seven extra-base hits.
St. Mary's College is off to a 3-2 start with three straight wins. The Seahawks swept a doubleheader at home against Widener in their last time out, after dropping two of three to Randolph-Macon in their season-opening series on the road. Jered Eaker has 10 hits already this season, hitting .556 with four runs scored and driven in.
