No. 22 CNU Plays for Regular Season Title Sunday Evening

Senior Night for Kelly Halverson and manager Jonathan Blas

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Thanks in part to a Methodist University win over 16th-ranked Ferrum College on Saturday, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will be playing for a chance to win the 2012-13 regular season conference championship on Sunday. The Captains (22-2, 15-2) will host Averett University (8-16, 7-10), at 5:00 pm with live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com.

The Cougars saw their postseason ticket stamped on Saturday, when they locked up the No. 8 seed in next weeks USA South Conference Tournament. Meredith College defeated Piedmont College to eliminate the Lions from contention and help Averett earn a postseason bid. On the other side of the court, the Captains' seeding is still up in the air determined by tomorrow's conference games. A three-game tie atop the league between CNU, Ferrum and Maryville will be sorted out on the final day of the regular season. A win will assure at least a share of the 2012-13 USA South regular season title.

The Captains come into Sunday's final regular season game riding a nine-game winning streak and will look to close out the year with their second double-digit win streak of the year. Before the game, CNU will have a special ceremony to honor this year's senior class in their final home regular season game. Kelly Halverson is the Captains' lone student-athlete in the senior class, but Coach Broderick will also honor team manager Jonathan Blas.

CNU is one of the top defensive teams in the nation, ranking 12th nationally in field-goal defense (31.1%) and 22nd in scoring defense (49.7 ppg). The numbers get even better when teams take shots from beyond the arc, as CNU is holding opponents to just 22.7% shooting, a mark that ranks ninth nationally.

Sophomore Camry Green is leading the Captains in rebounding, ranking second in the league with 9.9 boards per game. She is also pouring in 11.3 points per game, second on the team, while juniors Tia Perry (14.0 ppg) and Nicole Mitchell (10.3 ppg) are the other Captains in double figures.

Averett comes into Sunday's tilt winners in three of their last four games as senior Mette Scheiman continues to lead the squad. Scheiman is averaging 14.0 points per game with 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per as well. Shannon Smith is second on the team, averaging 9.6 points per game.

The game will be available in a live video webcast on Captains Sports Live at CNUsports.com/LIVE, and live statistics are also available.
