Second Half Surge Lifts Washington & Lee Past Christopher Newport, 12-9

Box Score
LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite a strong first half by the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team, Washington & Lee had an electric third period and eventually overcame its halftime deficit to pull out a 12-9 victory over the Captains at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon.

John Thompson led CNU with three goals and an assist, while Aaron Chrzaszcz also scored twice for the Captains. Chase Walton and Gregory Limon each chipped in with a goal and an assist as well, while Andy McGregor made 12 saves in the net for Christopher Newport (0-1).

After Washington & Lee (1-1) struck first with a goal just nine seconds into the game, the Captains settled in. At the five-minute mark, Walton forced a turnover and quickly dished to Thompson, who blasted a shot through the General defense to knot the game at one. Less than three minutes later, after a W&L penalty, Joey Rolando took advantage of the man-up situation and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead after converting on a pass from Gregory Limon.

CNU's strong start carried right over into the second period as the Captains picked up a little breathing room. Walton took a pass from Alex Barber and launched a bullet into the back of the net. Later, after the Generals whittled their deficit down to one at 3-2, Barber set up a score by Limon to regain Christopher Newport's two-goal edge.

With time winding down in the first half, the Captains orchestrated one last run. Following a Washington & Lee turnover, Billy Crist fed Chrzaszcz, who found some space and ripped a shot through the General defense to give CNU a 5-2 lead just before the horn sounded.

Unfortunately, the tides turned against CNU in the third period. Less than eight minutes into the second half, the hosts used a three-goal surge to even the game at five. Later, after Joe Wood scored to give the Generals a slim 6-5 advantage, the W&L attack broke loose. Tyler Goldman scored a pair of goals during a 25-second span before Mac Means tacked on another one to give the hosts a 9-5 edge. Although Will Geise added a score for the Captains in the waning moments of the stanza, the hosts carried a three-goal advantage heading into the final period.

After Wood kept the momentum on the General side with a goal just two minutes into the fourth period, Thompson caught fire for the Captains. Ari Elgort quickly won the ensuing faceoff and tossed a perfect pass to Thompson, who roped a rocket into the net to pull CNU back within three at 10-7. Later the sophomore standout converted on a man-up opportunity for his second goal of the game before assisting on a score by Chrzaszcz, which brought Christopher Newport within one at 10-9.

Sadly for the Captains, the comeback bid came to a halt after that. Cooper Brown and Mac Means each scored a goal for the Generals during a one-minute run that put the game out-of-reach at 12-9. Although the CNU attack tested the W&L defense with a few clean shots late in the period, Warren Berenis made two key saves to keep the visitors off the board and seal the three-goal victory.

During the game, Washington & Lee held a 46-30 advantage in shots, while Max Hutson was 12-of-19 on faceoffs for the Generals.

Christopher Newport will be back in action next Saturday when the Captains travel to Lynchburg for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Randolph College.
