NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, Feb 12 as they host Eastern Mennonite University (2-1) at 2:00 pm. CNU will also face off against Randolph-Macon College (2-1) this Thursday, Feb 14 at 2:00 pm. That game was moved from it's originally scheduled date of Wednesday due to poor weather expected in the area.
On Tuesday, the Captains will look to maintain their sterling 4-0 start to the season when they take on the Royals of Eastern Mennonite. CNU opens the year with a nine-game homestand, including this week's games. So far, it has been timely hitting and solid pitching that has led to the quick start.
This weekend, CNU posted an eight-run rally in the bottom of the ninth and then got another late-inning win with a seventh inning go-ahead double on Sunday. Both wins led to a conference sweep over Ferrum College, aided by USA South Player of the Week
Justin Weaver and Conference Pitcher of the Week
Bryan Bierlein. Bierlein tossed seven innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts and Weaver had two game-winning hits for the Captains offense.
Eastern Mennonite has started the year 2-1 with a pair of wins against USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan College. The Royals followed up the doubleheader sweep on the road with a one-run loss to Ferrum College. Junior Jonathan Estrada leads the way, hitting .364 with three RBI.
The game against Randolph-Macon was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon but will now be played a day later, on Thursday. Rain is expected in the Hampton Roads area on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets are also 2-1 as Michael Trentham has led the offensive attack. Trentham has gone 5-for-9 through the first three games with five runs and four RBI. In a three-game set against St. Mary's College (Md.), R-MC won a pair, 4-3 and 18-4.
