NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team will head out on the road Wednesday to kick off a three-game swing away from home against Southern Virginia University. Tip is set for 5:30 pm as part of a doubleheader with the men's programs, in a preview of future conference matchups.
Like CNU, the Knights are new to the Capital Athletic Conference this season. Although they are a full-time member of the CAC, the school is still under an NCAA provisional period because of its transition to Division III. Therefore, their matches against conference opponents will not count towards the league standings in 2013.
The Captains moved up in the
USA Today Sports Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll this week and are currently ranked 14th nationally after starting 4-1 overall. CNU is also ranked 15th by D3hoops.com and are riding a four-game winning streak heading into Wednesday's tilt. The Knights are currently 2-4 overall, coming off a thrilling overtime victory against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn).
A potent CNU offense has been led by seniors
Nicole Mitchell and
Tia Perry this season, ranked first and second on the team in both scoring and rebounding. Perry is pouring a team-high 19.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while Mitchell is adding 14.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest. Sophomore
Brandi Holland is coming off the bench to add 10.8 points per game, while hitting 84% of her free-throws.
Southern Virginia has been led by freshman guard Tatiana Monsen, averaging 15.0 points per game, but sophomores Crystal Cleveland and Shannon Romito have been stellar and more efficient this season. Cleveland, averaging 9.3 points and a team-high 9.7 rebounds per game, is a tough presence inside at over six feet tall. Romito is hitting at an impressive 60% clip so far this year, coming off the bench to add 12.8 points per game.
