NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- It's been almost a month since the Christopher Newport men's basketball squad hosted a game at the Freeman Center, and a lot has happened to
John Krikorian's team in that time. The Captains have won four straight road games since November 24th, moved into 18th place in the National Poll from D3hoops.com, and Sunday snapped a 12-game losing streak to Virginia Wesleyan that dated back to 2001.
Tonight, the Captains hope to keep building momentum heading into the holidays, as CNU hosts Salisbury University at the Freeman Center. Tipoff for the Capital Athletic Conference game is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Captains, now 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Capital, defeated the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan at the Batten Center in Virginia Beach on Sunday. The 83-80 overtime win was the first ever in seven games at the Batten Center for Christopher Newport.
The 7-1 start for the Captains is the best for a CNU men's squad since the 2001-02 season, when CNU started the year 14-1 and ended up with a 23-5 overall record.
Senior
Tra Benefield has been a big reason for the success of the Captains. Benefield scored 30 against the Marlins, and was named the Capital's Player of the Week on Monday. Today, he was selected to the National Team of the Week by D3hoops.com. Benefield is now averaging 20 points per game, and is eighth on the all-time scoring list at CNU with 1,455 career points.
Salisbury is 2-3 so far this season and 0-1 in the Capital. The Sea Gulls have not played since December 4th, when they were beaten at home by St. Mary's in conference play, 57-48.
The game will be the 29th in the all-time series, with the Captains holding an 18-10 advantage. CNU has won four straight games in the series, which dates back to the 1980-81 season. It will be the first meeting of the schools as conference members.
Tipoff time is set for 7:30, and the game will be broadcast live with audio and video available at
