NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will return to conference action on Wednesday, as they play host to Salisbury University (4-2, 1-0) at 5:30 pm. The Captains (6-2, 0-1) will be looking for their first ever CAC win, with links to live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com.
CNU, ranked No. 23 in the
USA Today Sports Division III Coaches Poll, has won six of their last seven games, with the only loss coming to undefeated and now nationally-ranked York (Pa.) in the conference opener. Last time out, the Captains were stretched to overtime on the road at Lynchburg, but escaped with a 75-70 win. The home tilt against the Sea Gulls kicks off a four-game homestand spanning the next three and a half weeks, which includes the holiday break.
The Captains have been led by seniors
Tia Perry and
Nicole Mitchell. Mitchell was named the CAC Player of the Week after a 25-point performance against the Hornets, and has raised her scoring average to 17.1 points per game. Perry has posted four 20-point games in the first eight contests and leads the CNU offense with 18.6 points per game, while also leading the rebounding efforts with 8.4 per game.
Led by the senior scoring tandem, the Captains boast the 22nd-ranked scoring offense in the nation, with 81.1 points per game. The veteran group has also done a great job protecting the basketball, ranking 19th nationally in turnover margin (8.13).
Salisbury is led by one of the region's top players, Anna Hackett, who ranks 24th nationally in scoring (20.8 ppg) while also checking in at 18th in assists (6.2) and 30th in steals (3.5) per game. The 5-4 junior guard has another top player in the back court with her, as junior Courtney McManus is torching the nets from long-range this season, ranking 30th in three-point field goal percentage (.464) and in the top 50 in three's made per game (2.6). The Sea Gulls are one of the most efficient offenses in the league, knocking down 42.3% of shots as a team.
The game will be presented in a live video webcast at Captains Sports Live on the CNU website, and live stats will also be available. Links can be found on the schedule page of CNUsports.com.
