NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday with a test against unbeaten Randolph College (5-0, 2-0 ODAC) on Sunday afternoon, at 2:00 pm. The Captains (3-1) host the WildCats in the Freeman Center, with links to live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com.
Christopher Newport is riding a modest three-game winning streak after a season-opening setback to Randolph-Macon College, now ranked 19th nationally, and will take on a WildCat program that has streaked out to five straight wins to opent the season. It is a program record start to the season and matches their longest winning streak.
This will be the first matchup between the two programs.
The Captains are led by three players averaging double figures this season, including seniors
Tia Perry and
Nicole Mitchell. Perry has a pair of double-doubles through the first four games and leads the team with 17.3 points per game. Mitchell is hitting over 48% of her shots while pouring in 15.5 points per game. Sophomore
Brandi Holland is the third CNU player in double figures, dropping 11.8 points per game to go with 2.5 steals and 3.5 assists per game.
CNU features the 29th ranked offense in the nation, averaging 84.0 points per game. Defensively, the Captains are holding opponents to 73.0 points per game and under 38% from the field.
Randolph is led by one of the nation's leaders in field goal percentage, junior Jensen Hoover. Currently ranked 10th in the country, knocking down 78.6% of her shots, Jensen has gone 33-of-42 from the field through five games this season. She is averaging a team-best 16.4 points per game and the 5-9 third-year player is also hauling in 9.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Abigail Bullins is also in double figures, averaging 14.6 points per game, knocking down 2.2 three's per game.
