Captains Host Roanoke in Home Opener Sunday at Noon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team hosts Roanoke College (2-2) at Noon on Sunday, in their 2013 home opener. The Captains (2-1) are looking for their third straight win; links to live video and live stats will be available at CNUsports.com.

Despite matching up 22 times in the all-time series, with CNU holding a slight 12-10 advantage, it will be just the second trip for the Maroons to the Freeman Center. The first time came in the 2011 NCAA Tournament second round, when the then-undefeated Captains picked up their 30th straight win to advance to the Sweet 16.

CNU, under the direction of Bill Broderick in his second year, was ranked as high as third nationally in the preseason. The coaches' poll currently lists CNU as the 18th-best program in the nation after week 1, while D3hoops.com still has CNU at No. 3 with no regular season poll out yet.

The Captains high-powered offense has been led by seniors Tia Perry and Nicole Mitchell. As a team, the Captains are averaging 87.4 points per game, led by Perry's 21.7 and Mitchell's 15.7. Perry has added nine rebounds per game while Mitchell is hitting at 49% fom the floor. Sophomores Brandi Holland and La'Shay Lucas have combined for over 18 points per game this year.

Roanoke won their first two games but then gave up back-to-back 100-point games in setbacks against Ferrum College and Randolph-Macon College. Head coach Susan Dunagan has three players in double figures so far this season, as Paxton Gwin, Tatum McKee and Kelsey Smith are leading the attack.
