CNU Men's Basketball Travels to Randolph-Macon Looking for Win #800

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University men's basketball squad plays on the road for the first time in the 2013-14 season Tuesday night. The Captains, fresh off a 79-66 season-opening win Saturday over Arcadia at the Freeman Center, travel to Ashland, Va., Tuesday night to take on Randolph-Macon College. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Christopher Newport will be looking to pick up the 800th win in the history of the men's program. This is the 47th season of Captains men's basketball, and CNU squads have an overall record of 799-419 for a winning percentage of .656.

The Captains got 24 points from junior Mike Cherry to lead the way in Saturday's win over Arcadia. Senior Tra Benefield added 15 points, and freshman Tim Daly posted 15 rebounds in his first game as a Captain.

Benefield, a pre-season All-America selection by d3hoops.com, is now 11th on the all-time Captains scoring list. He needs just 17 points to catch Jermaine Woods for 10th place all-time.

John Krikorian's team beat Randolph-Macon last season at the Freeman Center, 77-70, in the season opener for the Captains. Benefield led the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. CNU went on to a 22-6 final record last season and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets come into play 1-1 so far this season following a split last weekend in a tournament in Scranton, PA. Randolph-Macon defeated Penn State-Abington on Friday, 109-86, and then lost to Scranton on Saturday, 78-76. RMC was 21-10 last season.

Tipoff time is set for 8:00 p.m. All CNU games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at 7:40 p.m.
