CNU Men's Soccer Travels to Mary Washington Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With the Capital Athletic Conference regular season in full swing, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday. CNU (8-4-1, 2-1-0) will take on the Eagles (8-5-0, 2-2-0) at 4:00 pm on the road, with live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com.

After a pair of wins last week, the Captains will look to continue their modest roll against the Eagles, who they will be playing as conference opponents for the first time in program history. The two teams have a tight history, dating back to 1977, in which CNU holds a slight 18-15-3 advantage.

This season, CNU's potent offense ranks second in the league in goals scored, with 33. The Captains have gotten ten goals from 2012 All-American Jalon Brown, including five game-winning strikes. He leads the CAC in goals scored and total points (25), and is followed closely by sophomore Ryan Balfour. Balfour is second in both categories, scoring 18 points on eight goals and two assists.

Defensively, junior Alec Faulkner has moved back to help solidify the back line after a couple of in-season injuries to other players. He joins the starting back of Tommy O'Neal, Charlie Dodge and Garrett Van Nutt are holding opponents to just 4.8 shots on goal per game. Senior Sean Killion has played the bulk of the minutes in goal, with a 0.82 goals against average.

So far this season for Mary Washington, the Eagles have featured a balanced scoring attack. Thirteen different players have entered the scoring column, and seven have scored more than one goal this year. Rookie forward Jacob Burke has led the attack, with four goals and two assists, scoring 10 total points.

Last season, the two teams played in Fredericksburg for a late-season non-conference battle. The Captains came away with a 4-1 win, extending their win streak against the Eagles to four games.
