STAUNTON, Va. -- The 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will look to improve on its sparkling 11-0 record when they travel to play Mary Baldwin College (0-11, 0-4) for a conference game on Wednesday night, with tip set for 7:00 pm. The Captains have started the USA South regular season with an unbeaten 4-0 record, winning two of those games on the current nine-game road swing.
CNU will face the Fighting Squirrels in the halfway point of the road trip, game number five of nine away from the Freeman Center. The Captains will round out the second half of the swing with games at Averett, N.C. Wesleyan, Ferrum and Maryville.
The Captains have been led by sophomore
Camry Green, averaging a double-double this season with 10.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, and juniors
Tia Perry and
Nicole Mitchell. Perry is chipping in a team-high 15.0 points per game, while Mitchell is adding 10.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Mitchell ranks third in the nation in free-throw percentage, knocking down 94.3% from the line.
Mary Baldwin has struggled this season, featuring a lineup of just seven players. Shanice Miles, a sophomore, is leading the team with 11.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. As a team, the Fighting Squirrels are averaging over 30 turnovers compared to just 29.3 points scored per game.
