FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The 25th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (11-0, 4-0) dominated defensively Saturday afternoon, holding Methodist University (7-3, 3-1) to just 37 points in a big conference win on the road, 61-37. The CNU defense forced 18 turnovers and a Monarchs' shooting percentage of just 27.8% from the field, cruising to a big second-half lead for the win. The Captains were led offensively by a seventh double-double from sophomore forward
Camry Green, scoring 13 points and adding 11 rebounds.
Early runs by both teams saw the score teeter in the first half, as CNU opened with six straight, followed by nine unanswered from the home team. The Captains would take the lead for good, though, when
Tia Perry knocked down a layup with 11:38 remaining to make it 12-10. Rookie
Jordan Miller hit a big three-pointer to give the Captains some breathing room as the two teams would battle to a 21-18 Captains lead with eight minutes remaining.
It was then that the 25th-ranked CNU squad would take control, holding the home team empty for the final 8:02 of the half. A 12-0 run for the Captains gave Coach
Bill Broderick's team a 33-18 lead headed into the locker room for a 15-point edge. Miller knocked down two three-pointers in the final two possessions for the Captains, while the defense forced five turnovers in the stretch.
With the lead built, CNU could cruise to the win in the second half, but would continue to apply the pressure, and the defense posted an even better 20 minutes after the break. The Monarchs shot 32% in the first half, but the Captains defense forced 22 missed shots in the second for a 24.1% shooting percentage. Overall in the game, the Captains D held Methodist to just 27.8% from the floor.
The second half was steady for the Captains, as they held the lead in double digits throughout, building the lead to the final, of 24 points, at 61-37. Methodist cut the lead as close as 13 with 13:17 showing on the clock, but the Captains answered with 10 of the next 11 points to build the lead back with 22, 52-30, with under ten minutes to play.
Iesha Hayes led the Monarchs with 11 points and three steals, but no other Monarch played scored more than two field goals in the game.
Three Captains finished in double figures, with Green and Perry pouring in a game-high 13 points each. Junior
Nicole Mitchell rounded out the top scorers for CNU, with 12 points on 4-of-8 from the floor. Mitchell also grabbed a game-high five steals with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Miller added nine points on 3-for-5 from three-point land. Green added 11 rebounds for her double-double, picking up a pair of steals as well.
CNU is now 11-0 to start the season, including a 4-0 record to start a tough nine-game road trip in the middle of the season. The swing away from home continues this Wednesday, January 9 at Mary Baldwin with game time set for 7:00 pm.
