NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 16th-ranked CNU women's basketball team will look to extend its season-opening win streak Wednesday night as they head to Rocky Mount, N.C. to take on North Carolina Wesleyan (5-8, 4-2) at 7:00 pm. The Captains have opened the year 13-0, with a 6-0 record in league play, and hopes to keep that streak alive in the seventh game of a nine-game road trip.
The Captains defense has been very strong all season long, allowing just two opponents to score more than 55 points in a game this year. The scoring defense ranks 16th in the nation, as opponents average just 47.9 points scored on the Captains; over the last five games, CNU has held their foes to a paltry 40.4 points per game.
Offensively,
Camry Green has seven double-doubles this season, ranking 33rd in the nation. She is averaging 10.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, ranking second in the league in rebounding. Juniors
Tia Perry (14.3 ppg) and
Nicole Mitchell (10.0 ppg) are also pacing the Captains offense. Mitchell ranks second in the nation in free-throw percentage, knocking down 91.7% of her shots from the charity stripe.
N.C. Wesleyan went just 1-6 in out-of-conference games, but have answered the call against USA South opponents, going 4-2 against the league. Senior Samantha Urquhart is leading the team in scoring and rebounding, chipping in 12.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Tiffany Bell comes off the bench and also scores in double figures, averaging 12.0 points per game.
