No. 13 Captains Return Home to Host LaGrange in USA South Action

Tip set for 4:00 pm at the Freeman Center Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (11-2, 4-1) will look to bounce back after a double overtime loss earlier this week, facing another stiff test as they host LaGrange College (7-4, 1-2) on Saturday at 4:00 pm. CNU kicks off a six-game homestand with the USA South Conference game against the Panthers. Live stats and video will be available at CNUsports.com.

The game will be broadcast live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network on Xtra 99.1 FM, and live video is available at CNUsports.com/LIVE.

Saturday's matchup will be just the second in program history against LaGrange, as CNU picked up a 97-83 win last year on the road. LaGrange, in its first year in the USA South, has never travelled to play at the Freeman Center and will bring a 2-1 record in road games into the contest.

The Captains, who dropped a heartbreaking conference game to N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday, have been led by junior Tra Benefield who recently became the Captains' 28th 1,000-point scorer in CNU history. Benefield is currently 25th on the all-time list with 1,049 points and is just 20 shy of CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Andy Waclawski for 24th in career points scored. This season, the junior from Folkston, Ga. is averaging a team-high 19.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game and is shooting 53% from the floor. Sophomores Mike Cherry (17.3 ppg) and Nik Biberaj (15.2 ppg) have been key for the Captains offense, and Biberaj is coming off back-to-back career best performances.

LaGrange features an athletic group of scorers including junior Patrick Dugger and and senior Marcus Vaughn. Both are in the top five in the league in rebounding and are among the team's top three in scoring. Dugger, a transfer, has 16 blocks through the first 11 games and has scored 10.9 points per game. Vaughn ranks second in the league in rebounding with 9.2 per game and is chipping in 10.6 points per contest.

Tip is set for 4:00 pm.

PLEASE NOTE: The USA South game against Piedmont College, originally scheduled for Sunday, January 13, has been cancelled due to the Lions cancelling their 2012-13 season.
