LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore
Jalon Brown scored on a penalty kick with less than four minutes remaining to give CNU a 2-1 win on the road over Lynchburg College (1-5-1) on Wednesday night. Brown knocked in his fourth goal of the season and second winner on the PK, as CNU improved to 4-1-2 overall this season.
Late in the first half, the Captains took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted score by senior midfielder
Sean Moriarty. The senior captain had two shots in the game, both of them on-goal, including the go-ahead tally in the 41st minute of action.
With a lead in hand, the Captains went into the break up 1-0 and holding an 8-4 advantage in total shots. Junior keeper
Sean Killion needed to make just one stop in the first half to preserve the halftime lead.
Just over nine minutes into the second half, however, the Hornets scored the equalizer on an unassisted goal by Luke Moore. Moore had four shots in the game, putting three on-goal.
The draw would hold until the final minutes, when the Lynchburg defense made a critical mistake with just 3:45 showing on the clock. Senior midfielder
Denny Arinello for the Captains dribbled by his defender inside the box and was dragged down for the foul. The call set up the penalty kick for Brown, who blasted a hard shot into the left corner.
The Captains held a 16-11 advantage in total shots, including a slight 6-4 edge in shots on-frame. Killion allowed just the one goal while making three saves for CNU.
Christopher Newport is now set to return home after a five-game road trip in which they went 4-0-1. CNU will take on Maryville College in USA South action this Saturday at 3:00 pm.
