NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University baseball team started off the 2012 Newport News Regional of the NCAA tournament with a stunning 3-1 loss to sixth seeded Messiah College. The Captains will take on the loser of the #2 Salisbury/#5 Lynchburg game at 9:30 tomorrow morning. The Falcons advance to face the loser of tonight's game three between #3 Shenandoah and #4 Rowan.

The start of the game was delayed over an hour due to inclement weather in the Hampton Roads area. The lapse did not seem to effect either pitcher, though, as both tossed quality starts for their team.

Jon Lapp had an impressive performance on the mound for Messiah, pitching a complete game and only giving up three hits. He allowed one unearned run and did not walk a batter to secure the complete game win, improving to 5-4 on the year.

Greg Goldsmith got the start for the Captains and pitched seven solid innings giving up five hits and allowing three runs. Richard Lindsay finished out the game striking out two and allowing no hits.

The Falcons scored all three of their runs in the third inning with Sam Tajiri, Ryan Brown and Wes Hollenbach all knocking in runs. The lead proved to be too much for the Captains who scored their lone run in the eighth.

Billy Steel, Connor Madden and Steven Keener each had hits and pinch runner, Preston Grissom, scored the Captains' lone run.

The loss drops CNU to 30-8 on the year and Messiah improves to 20-23.
