FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (12-3, 2-1) suffered its first loss in USA South action this season today, after Methodist starter Chris Perry hurled a complete game shutout. The Monarchs improve to 13-8 overall, 1-2 in the USA South behind the junior's dominant performance.
Methodist got on the board in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Trey Such had an RBI single and Brandon Thigpen added a sacrifice fly in the frame.
CNU starter
Bryan Bierlein got out of the inning with just the two runs on two hits and one error committed. He then tossed six shutout innings to keep the Captains in the game. He gave up one more run in the bottom of the eighth when Thigpen singled in David Lutz.
Bierlein pitched a complete game, suffering a loss with two earned runs allowed and four total strikeouts. Perry was dominant on the other side of the field, striking out 13 and giving up just four hits for the Captains in a complete game win.
Steven Keener laced a two-out double to left center in the second inning, while rookies
Preston Grissom and
Andy Viands added singles in the fifth.
Connor Madden rounded out the Captains offense with a single in the eighth inning.
The Captains and Monarchs will play again on Sunday with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
