Captains Face Averett on the Road Wednesday

CNU looking for bounce-back win

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team (17-4, 12-2) returns to action today, now locked in a three-way tie atop the USA South Athletic Conference standings. The Captains will travel to Danville to face Averett University (10-11, 6-8) at 5:30 pm. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.

The Captains hold a dominant 59-9 all-time edge against the Cougars, but Averett nipped the Captains last year on their home court, 58-50. This year, CNU beat Averett in the Freeman Center, 62-43, behind a double-double from rookie Camry Green and 12 points from senior Lauren Gural.

CNU is coming off just its second conference loss of the season, falling at Ferrum College on Sunday and dropping into a dead-lock with the Panthers and Greensboro College for first place in the league. Ferrum and Greensboro will play today at 5:30.

CNU sophomores Tia Perry and Nicole Mitchell continue to lead the way, each averaging over 11 points and six rebounds per game, but the Captains balance is what has led to the 17-win campaign. Just one player, Mitchell, is averaging more than 30 minutes played per game so far this season.

Averett has struggled of late, falling in six of their last seven games, including five straight losses. The Cougars as led by 12.2 points per game from Mette Scheiman and 11.8 points from Liz Martin. Center Kyana Smith averages a double-double, hauling in 10.7 rebounds to go with 10.7 points per game.
