FERRUM, Va. -- Rookie center
Camry Green scored a career-high 17 points with 12 rebounds in her fifth double-double of the season, but it would not be enough as the Captains saw their 12-game streak halted by Ferrum College (17-4, 12-2), 82-58. Christopher Newport, sporting an identical record, falls into a tie for the conference lead with the Panthers.
The Captains could not overcome an off night shooting, hitting just 33.8% of their shots on 25-of-74 from the field. Ferrum led by as many as 30 in the second half, before a late CNU run closed to within 17 on the road. Ferrum held off the comeback effort, closing with the final seven points for the final, 82-58.
CNU trailed by just 14 at halftime, despite enduring a 5-of-8 performance from three-point land from the home Panthers. The 63% effort put Ferrum up 39-25 at the break. Green scored 11 points and hauled in seven rebounds in the first half, but the rest of the team hit just 6-of-24 shots.
In the second half, the shooting woes continued for CNU, as the Captains opened up just 1-for-9 to start the second half. Ferrum stayed hot, using an 18-2 run to open the second half and pull ahead by the game-high 30.
A 12-2 run going the other way pulled CNU back within 20 as
Nicole Mitchell led the way with a pair of tough layups. Senior
Jerlisa Bowser hit a three with 4:34 remaining, making the score 71-51, and
Andrea Hobbs added the next seven points to pull CNU back within 17, at 75-58 with 1:56 showing.
Green's 7-for-15 night shooting resulted in the game-high 17 points, while she also grabbed 12 boards and had one block. Hobbs finished with nine points, three assists and four steals, while
Lauren Gural added eight points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
Ferrum had six players in double figures and all nine players scored at least one point. The team also shared the ball well, dishing out 25 assists on 30 made field goals. Tesla Akers finished with 15 points and five assists.
The Captains stay out on the road for their next game, traveling to Averett University on Wednesday, February 8. Tip is set for 5:30 pm in Danville.
