NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University will begin defense of its three straight USA South Conference Championships Tuesday night, as they host seventh-seeded Shenandoah University (9-16) at 7:00 pm. The Captains (20-5) locked up a share of the regular season conference championship and are the number two seed headed into the 2012 Tournament.
CNU swept Shenandoah in the regular season series, beating them 77-53 in the Freeman Center, then 68-52 in Winchester last week. CNU has won 11 straight over the Hornets and holds a 38-6 advantage in the all-time series.
This year's Captains are looking to become just the second team in USA South history to win four straight tournament titles. CNU is led by sophomores
Tia Perry (12.1 points, 7.1 rebounds) and
Nicole Mitchell (11.5 points, 6.0 rebounds), while rookie
Camry Green (8.1 points, 7.4 rebounds) has impressed in her first year. A trio of seniors,
Jerlisa Bowser,
Lauren Gural and
Kimmy Hopkins look to make history in their final run in the conference tournament.
Shenandoah comes into tonight's game losers of four straight and five of their last six games. Still, the Hornets boast one of the most quality wins in the league season, beating Ferrum on the road, 77-68. Shenandoah is led by sophomore Sam Akers (11.3 points) and junior Nicole Gilbertson (9.0 points, 7.7 rebounds).
