#4 Captains Take on Randolph-Macon Wednesday at 2 pm

Yellow Jackets receiving votes in preseason poll

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a pair of postponed games over the weekend, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport University baseball team (1-0) will return to action on Wednesday, February 15, hosting Randolph-Macon College (1-0) at 2:00 pm. The Yellow Jackets are receiving votes in the D3baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball preseason polls.

CNU holds a 25-15 advantage in the all-time series over the Yellow Jackets, including a pair of wins last season. R-MC won the ODAC Conference Championship last season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament behind First Team All-American Jordan Walton and a high-powered offense. Walton hit an NCAA record 31 doubles last season and led the nation in total hits. Macon opened the season with a 4-3 extra-inning victory over St. Mary's (Md.) in the first of what was supposed to be a three-game set, shortened due to weather.

The Captains return to the field for the second game of the year on Wednesday, led by All-Americans Connor Madden and Matt Shoemaker. Madden was named the USA South Player of the Week after a 4-for-5 opening performance that included a grand slam and five RBI. Shoemaker was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, as the Captains offense exploded for 20 base hits in the season opener.

On the hill, sophomore Bryan Bierlein spun a quality start with six innings and six K's, followed by a 7-8-9 combo of juniors Richard Lindsay, Matt Verdillo and Ryan Fleischmann. The pitching staff struck out 11 and held the Hampden-Sydney Tigers to just two runs and a .150 batting average against.

Live stats will be available of Wednesday's game, beginning after first pitch at 2:00 pm.
