NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Freeman Center will play host to a crucial USA South matchup on Saturday, as the Christopher Newport University Captains (18-4, 13-2) look to remain atop the conference standings, taking on the Greensboro College Pride (17-4, 12-3) at 2:00 pm. The Captains are one game ahead of the Pride in the USA South with just three games to go and Saturday's tilt has major conference seeding ramifications.
Heading into the weekend, CNU is locked in a tie for the top spot in the USA South with Ferrum College. The Panthers take on Methodist while CNU faces the Pride on Saturday. Earlier this season, the Captains defeated Greensboro on the road, 48-42.
CNU has won 13 of their last 14 games, led by 12 points a game from
Tia Perry and 11.4 per game from
Nicole Mitchell. The team's leading rebounder,
Camry Green, at 7.1 boards per game, is also third on the squad in scoring with 7.9 points per game. It was Perry with a team-high 14 points against the Pride earlier this season, while senior
Lauren Gural hauled in 10 rebounds.
Greensboro, led by 2010-11 USA South Coach of the Year Randy Tuggle, saw its nine-game win streak snapped last time out, with a 72-63 setback to Ferrum, knocking the Pride out of a three-way tie for first. Preseason All-American Danielle Duncan is averaging 19.7 points per game and junior Bianca Richburg is pouring in 13.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
The game tips at 2:00 pm as part of a conference doubleheader. The men's team will follow immediately with tip set for 4:00 pm. Live stats and a live video webcast is available at CNUsports.com.
