Captains Face St. Mary's in Non-Conference Finale Tonight, 7:00 pm

CNU has opened the year 8-0

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The unbeaten Christopher Newport women's basketball team will put their 8-0 record on the line in the regular season non-conference finale Saturday night, as the Captains take on St. Mary's College (Md.) on the road at 7:00 pm. Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com.

The game will be the first for CNU in 12 days after a break for the holidays into which the Captains had surged, posting the second best start to a season in program history. The run can continue against the Seahawks, whom the Captains already defeated at home earlier this season, 77-51.

The Captains are at the start of a nine-game road trip through the bulk of January. Tonight's non-conference finale leads into a seven-game USA South Conference road trip over a 16-day span.

Junior Tia Perry has led the Captains offense, scoring 15.9 points per game, while Nicole Mitchell (10.8 ppg) and sophomore Camry Green (10.3 ppg) are also averaging double figures. Green is averaging a double-double while leading the team in rebounding at 10.0 boards per game.

The CNU team defense has been the leader so far, though, holding opponents to just 33.7% shooting on the year, including 21.4% from long-range. The Captains are averaging 13.6 steals per game and adding 3.6 blocks per contest. Perry has grabbed 3.3 steals per game, while adding 0.8 blocks per.

St. Mary's College is 5-4 to start the year, dropping four of the last five games including an overtime loss their last time out. Joanna Murray (14.4 ppg) and Sophie Pruden (10.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg) are leading the way for the Seahawks.
