MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The 18th-ranked Captains will open their final season of USA South Athletic Conference play on Saturday, as the CNU men's basketball team travels to Maryville College in Tennessee for the 2012 opener. CNU will tip off against the Fighting Scots at 2:00 pm, with live stats and live video available.
The Captains, off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2004, will put their unbeaten mark on the line for the conference opener against a Maryville team that has opened 2-2.
CNU has been led by sophomore
Mike Cherry, who earned a spot on the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week after earning MVP honors at the CNU/Point Plaza Invitational last week. He is averaging 22.3 points and 3.0 assists per game so far this season, while junior
Tra Benefield is close behind, with 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest.
The Fighting Scots, picked to finish second in the USA South Preseason Coaches Poll, have started the same five players in all four games this year and four of them are averaging over 20 minutes per game. Maryville has gotten a team-high 13.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game from 6-6 sophomore Oscar Butler while Wes Lambert and Joey Bodewig are both averaging over 8.5 points per game.
