SALISBURY, Md. -- The Captains early season schedule remains tough as the team travels to Salisbury University (3-0) tonight, for a 7:30 pm tip against the unbeaten Sea Gulls. CNU (1-0) is fresh off an upset of a Top 25 team in 24th-ranked Randolph-Macon, and will look to keep up its winning ways in the first road game of 2012-13.
The game will be available in live stats and a live video webcast at Salisbury's athletics website or through links at CNUsports.com.
Through just one game this season, Christopher Newport has been led by a trifecta of All-Conference performers. Junior
Tra Benefield and sophomore
Nik Biberaj each poured in double-doubles against the Yellow Jackets to help the Captains pull off the 77-70 upset. Benefield scored a team-high 25 points and grabbed 10 boards, while Biberaj added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore point guard
Mike Cherry, the 2012 USA South Rookie of the Year, added 16 points, three assists and two steals.
This will be the last time CNU will face Salisbury University in non-conference action before the Captains join the Capital Athletic Conference next year and take on the Sea Gulls in league play. CNU holds a 17-10 all-time advantage in the series as non-conference foes.
The Sea Gulls enter the game boasting the CAC's first Player of the Week of the season, Travon Vann. Vann led Salisbury to a 3-0 mark in the opening week, including a win of the 15th Annual Tip-Off Tournament in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He averaged 11 rebounds and 24.7 points per game in the opening week, while Tim Harwood (12.3 ppg) and Trent Epps (13.0 ppg) are also averaging double figure scoring.
Last season, Salisbury finished the year with a 12-13 overall mark and suffered an 81-65 setback to the Captains in the Freeman Center.
