Leading the way for Christopher Newport are All-Conference returners
Tia Perry,
Nicole Mitchell and
Camry Green. CNU was picked to finish third in the USA South Preseason Coaches Poll and is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com National Rankings.
Perry, a 5-9 junior forward, averaged a team-high 12.2 points per game while grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game, second on the squad. Mitchell, a Second Team All-Conference pick, poured in 11.5 points per game with a team-high 28 blocks, while USA South Rookie of the Year
Camry Green grabbed a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game.
The Captains schedule starts with the Marymount Tip-Off Classic this weekend. After the 5 pm tip on Friday, the two teams will advance to play at either 5:00 or 7:30 pm on Saturday. With a win, the Captains would play against the winner of the Marymount/Bridgewater at 7:30 pm The two losing teams will play in the earlier matchup.
Gettysburg enters Friday's season opener picked to finish fifth in the tough Centennial Conference. Last year Gettysburg finished the year with a 12-13 overall record under head coach Mike Kirkpatrick, entering his 24th season on the job. The Bullets graduated their two leading scorers from a year ago, but junior captain Caroline Murphy returns after averaging 8.1 points a 5.0 rebounds per game last season. Starters Alyssa Isler and Katie Earley will also return to the floor for GC.
