ASHLAND, Va. -- After suffering a setback on Saturday, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team bounced back in a big way on Sunday, blowing past Randolph-Macon on the road in a 6-0 final. The Captains (8-2-2) blanked the Yellow Jackets (2-7-2), scoring three goals in each half to run away with the win. Sophomore Jalon Brown and senior Andrew Bonorden each scored twice and added an assist to lead the way.

Rookie Nolan Mann got his first career start in goal for CNU, and picked up his first career shutout as he was untested against R-MC. The Captains defense, led by seniors Caleb Baker, Brendan Cook and sophomores Alec Faulkner and Tommy O'Neal, allowed just three total shots and none on-goal in the game.

On the other side of the field, Christopher Newport would waste little time taking a big lead over the home team. In the 14th minute of action, Bonorden slipped a pass to senior midfielder Denny Arinello for the first score of the game. The goal would prove to be Arinello's second goal of the season, both game-winning strikes.

Brown, who was held scoreless for only the second game of the season on Saturday, started his big day with the second goal of the contest. Junior midfielder Michael Breske set up the sophomore's 9th goal of the year to give CNU a 2-0 cushion. Senior reserve T.J. Byrd would add an unassisted goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first half to put CNU up by three at the break.

The Captains held an 8-0 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes, but the offense picked up the pace in the second half, taking 13 more shots and putting seven on-goal. One of those seven made it 4-0 just three minutes into the frame, when Arinello and Bonorden again combined for the first strike of the half. This time, it was Arinello setting up Bonorden for the blast.

CNU scored three times in the first 12:24 of the second half, led off by Bonorden's 5th and 6th goals of the year as Brown would set up his next tally just over two minutes later. Finally, Brown got his second goal of the day and tenth of the season in the 58th minute when senior Michael Zimmerman assisted on the final goal of the game.

The five-point performance gives Brown 24 on the season on 10 goals and four assists. Bonorden now has six goals and four assists for 16 points through the first 12 games. The senior forward continues his ascent up the career scoring charts for CNU and now ranks 18th in career goals (21), tied for 11th in career assists (17) and tied for 17th in career points (59).

Christopher Newport will return home for one game this week as they host a big regional matchup against Salisbury University on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00 pm at Captains Field. The game will be available through Live Stats and a Live Video Webcast at CNUsports.com/LIVE.
