NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior
Caleb Lewis scored his third goal of the season on a beautiful set piece from just outside the box, but it wouldn't be enough as Averett University (5-4-2, 3-2-0) ended the Captains eight-game unbeaten streak with a 3-1 win at Captains Field. Christopher Newport slips to 7-2-2 overall with a 3-1-1 record against the USA South.
All four goals in the game were scored in the first half, as Averett opened up the early lead and resisted the Captains pressure. The Cougars picked up an early lead in the eighth minute of action when Mark-Antony Liljeklev hit a hard shot on-frame that deflected off of a CNU defender into the goal.
The Captains answered just over four minutes later on a set piece from just outside the 18-yard box. Junior midfielder
Caleb Lewis stepped up to take the free kick and bent a perfect shot just over the wall and into the lower left pocket of the goal. It was his third goal of the year and the Captains picked up the momentum.
Over the next several minutes, the CNU offense blasted the Averett defense with repeated close chances. In one such string,
Jalon Brown powered a shot into the crossbar and on the following possession glanced a shot off of the left post as CNU threatened to take the lead.
Instead, it was Averett who converted their chances, scoring the next two goals to take a 3-1 halftime lead. Liljeklev scored the eventual gamewinner in the 22nd minute off an assist by Richard Bjornander, and then, in the 37th minute, John Thrower assisted on the final goal, scored by Nathan Brown.
The Captains will return to the field on Sunday, as they travel to face Randolph-Macon College in a 3:00 pm tilt.
