Captains Win at N.C. Wesleyan, 57-47

ROCKY MOUNT,  N.C. -- CNU women's basketball improved to 7-3 overall, 2-1 in the USA South today, with a 57-47 victory on the road at N.C. Wesleyan (4-4, 1-2). Senior Lauren Gural led a balanced attack by filling the stat sheet while a trio of sophomores finished in double figures.

Three Captains finished in double figures in the game, led by sophomore Tia Perry with 12 points. Classmates Nicole Mitchell and Andrea Hobbs helped give the sophomore class a great night with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Captains pulled ahead by seven at halftime, 27-20,  as the defense held the Bishops to just 25% shooting. N.C. Wesleyan hit just 7-of-28 shots in the first half, with a pair of three-pointers on seven attempts.

In the second half, CNU was able to build the lead all the way to 18 points with 10:46 remaining. The Captains defense continued to push, holding the Bishops to just 32% from the field in the second half, good for a 28.3% percentage in the game.

The two teams both struggled to hold onto the ball in the low-scoring game, combining for 40 turnovers. CNU had eight blocks, led by Gural's four, and 11 steals, led by three from Mitchell.

Gural played a game-high 34 minutes, and filled the stat sheet in her time on the floor. Just 2-of-6 from the floor, Gural knocked down five free-throws to finish with nine points. She chipped in the four blocks, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals for a well-rounded night.

Mitchell also finished just shy of a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds, while shooting 5-of-7 from the field.

The Bishops were led by Samantha Urquhart with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Shanice Goree chipped in 11 points as well.

The Captains will now return home for a conference swing as they host Meredith College on Saturday, January 7 at 2:00 pm, and Ferrum College on Sunday, January 8 at 2:00 pm.
