STAUNTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team returns to the hardwood tonight as they travel to Mary Baldwin College (4-9, 2-7) for a 7:00 pm tip. The Captains (13-3, 8-1) look to extend its current eight-game winning streak under head coach
Jon Waters.
Earlier this season, CNU defeated Mary Baldwin at home, 68-39, for the eighth straight victory against the Fighting Squirrels. CNU leads the all-time series 13-6. The Captains shot a season-best 54.5% from the field in that game, and added a season-best 12 blocks on the day.
The Captains defense has led the way this season, ranking in the nation's top 25 in field goal percentage defense (21st-31.9), scoring defense (25th-50.2) and blocked shots (24th-5.1). Sophomores
Tia Perry and
Nicole Mitchell continue to lead the way offensively, scoring 11.9 and 10.9 points per game, respectively.
The Fighting Squirrels are led by senior forward Sabrina Desper, averaging a team-high 14.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Rookie Shanice Miles is adding 12 points per game with 2.0 three-pointers made per contest.
