NEWPORT NEW, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team dropped their first game against #4 Salisbury 1-0 at Captains Field tonight. The Seagulls improved to 3-0 on the year while the Captains fell to 1-1.
The Captains and Seagulls played to a 0—0 tie in the first half with both teams fighting in a coast to coast battle. The Captains took four shots in the first half with two of them landing on the cage. CNU goalkeeper,
Jamie Dowling, made three saves as the Seagulls were able to penetrate the Captains' defense for three shots on cage.
The Seagulls picked up their momentum in the second half and just three and a half minutes in scored the only goal of the game. Summer Washburn crossed the ball across the circle and Erica Henderson slapped the ball into the top of the cage to give Salisbury the 1-0 advantage.
The Captains picked up their intensity and put pressure on the Seagulls in the remainder of the second half taking four more shots. But when time expired the Captains were unable to get the equalizing goal.
Salisbury outshot the Captains 13 to eight and had 13 penalty corners to CNU's four. Dowling totaled eight saves in the game while
Allie Hackbarth and
Chelsea Hines each picked up a defensive save.
Salisbury defender, Amber Holland, had a defensive save for the Seagulls.
This is the seventh game between CNU and Salisbury in the last six years that was won by one goal.
The Captains travel to Fredericksburg, Va. this weekend for the Mary Washington Tournament where they will face Centre College on Saturday and Liberty University on Sunday.
