HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball squad dropped their first match of the season, 3-2, at the hands of the Coast Guard Academy and finished the day with a 3-0 win over Stevens Institute.
Cory Harris led the Captains with 28 kills on the day while
Jessie Heavenrich totaled 98 assists.
In the first match of the day the Captains jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Coast Guard with a 25-17 first set win. The two teams battled back and forth in the second set and with the score tied at 13 the Coast Guard began to pull away scoring three straight points. They maintained their lead for the remainder of the set taking it 25-21.
The Captains bounced back in the third set and with the score tied at 5-5 they scored five straight points to make it 10-5. The Coast Guard pulled to within one at 13-12 but CNU answered with an eight-point run to extend their lead to 21-12. The Captains went on to win the third set 25-20.
After battling back and forth and tying the score ten times the Captains fell 26-24 in the fourth set forcing the match to a fifth set. The Captains took a 4-1 lead in the fifth set but a service and attacking error brought the Coast guard back to within one.
The two squads exchanged points and with the score an even 8-8 the Captains were called on a ball handling error giving the Coast Guard their first lead of the fifth set. After a kill by both teams the Captains tied the score at again with a kill from Heavenrich. The Coast Guard took the next three points to take a 13-10 lead. The Captains were able to put one more point on the board before the Coast Guard took the set 15-11 winning the match 3-2.
Christie Fellows totaled 16 kills in the match while
Bailey Jensen had 14 and Harris had 13. Heavenrich totaled 56 assists and had 21 digs and a service ace.
Abby Hogge also had 21 digs.
The Coast Guard was led by Kelsey Hickle with 16 kills and Karen Matic with 39 assists.
The Captains bounced back from their first loss of the season with a quick three-set victory over Stevens Institute. Set scores for the match were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-16. Harris had 15 kills in the match.
Chelsea McClure and Hogge both had two service aces and Hogge led with 12 digs.
The Captains had nine players with kills and had a team hitting percentage of .308 and held Stevens to a .155 hitting percentage.
The Captains return to action next weekend in the Washington University National Invite where they will be facing three nationally ranked squads in Carthage College, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Washington University.
