Captains Defeat Shenandoah 3-0 in Both Matches of Doubleheader

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team extended their win streak to nine matches with two 3-0 victories over USA South foe Shenandoah University. The wins improve the Captains to 16-2 overall and 9-0 in conference play while the Hornets drop to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in conference.

Set scores for the first match were 25-13, 25-16, and 25-17. Scores for the second match were 25-16, 25-14, and 25-15. The Captains had the lead in every set except a couple points in the first set of the night and a few points in the second set of the second match.

Junior Christie Fellows led the Captains with 24 kills, getting a career high 14 in the second match. She also had an impressive .778 hitting percentage in the second match with a .643 in the first match.

Senior Jessie Heavenrich totaled 34 assists in the first match and 32 in the second and also added seven service aces and four blocks for the Captains. Junior Abby Hogge led CNU with 21 digs on the night.

The Captains had a combined hitting percentage of .368 in the first match while they held Shenandoah to a .068. The second match was very similar with the Captains hitting .347 and the Hornets only .095.

CNU travels to Greensboro, N.C. this Saturday to take on Greensboro College as well as Methodist University. Matches are set to start at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
