ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Christopher Newport University No. 6 volleyball team finished a weekend full of USA South action with two more 3-0 wins. Freshman
Jessie Kolden led the team with 18 kills for the day in the Captains' 3-0 wins over Ferrum and Averett.
The Captains took the first set from the Panthers 25-8. The set ended with nine straight Captains' points with Kolden at the service line racking up four service aces. The second set started almost the same for the Captains with eight straight points with two service aces from freshman
Brooke Moore, two Captains' kills and a few errors from the Panthers. The Panthers were able to get back within five before the CNU took the set 25-13.
The third set was played much closer as the teams traded points for the first half of the set. But the Captains were able to pull away for a 25-18 win to take the match.
Sophomore
Chastity Lacy and freshman Jess Fedderson led the Captains in kills with seven apiece while Moore added up 21 assists and three service aces. Junior
Abby Hogge led with six digs and was followed by freshman Katie Jarret with five.
Ferrum was led by Kayla Trippeer with nine kills, Leah Quinones with 19 assists and Kellee Lewis with seven digs.
Kolden had 15 of the Captains' kills in the match against Averett while junior
Chelsea McClure had 10. Senior
Jessie Heavenrich had all but three of the Captains' assists with 35 total. She also added three service aces.
Set scores for the match were 25-15, 25-18, and 25-12. The Captains held the Cougars to a .063 hitting percentage while hitting .333 as a team. Junior
Bailey Jensen and McClure each got up for four blocks to help out the Captains defensively.
Averett was led by Allison Sparks with nine assists, Jesse Jones with 14 assists and Paige Aaron with 12 digs.
The Captains travel to Winchester, Va. on Wednesday to face Shenandoah in a doubleheader slated to start at 5:00pm.
