FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball squad continued their winning ways as they downed both Methodist and Greensboro in three sets apiece today. Freshman
Jessie Kolden and junior
Cory Harris led the Captains in kills for the day with 15 each. Senior
Jessie Heavenrich averaged 9.20 assists per set totaling 46 for both matches.
The Monarchs were able to hang with the Captains through the first few points of the first match staying within a point or two of the lead. But the Captains were able to piece together three and four point runs to extend the lead to as much as 10 before taking the set 25-13. The Captains dominated the second set as well, holding the Monarchs to 13 points again. The Monarchs were able to score a few mote points on the Captains in the third set but CNU won the match with a 25-17 third set victory.
The first match of the day saw 11 kills from Harris and nine from Kolden. Heavenrich had a great match offensively and defensively with 30 assists, two service aces, seven digs and four blocks.
The Monarchs were led by Jalesty Washington with eight kills, Kayci Miller with 25 assists and Stephanie Wood with four blocks.
CNU had an impressive team hitting percentage of .408 in the match against Greensboro while holding the Pride to a -.108. Greensboro fought hard in the first set taking 17 points from the Captains but struggled in the second and third set only scoring nine and six points.
Kolden and
Christie Fellows both had six kills in the match to lead the Captains with
Chelsea McClure,
Bailey Jensen, and Harris each adding four. Heavenrich and Kolden dominated from the service line each picking up four aces while Fellows added three. Heavenrich led the team with nine digs followed closely by
Abby Hogge with eight.
The Captains improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play today. Methodist dropped to 8-3 (2-3) and Greensboro is now 5-9 (1-4).
CNU stays on the road tomorrow with two matches in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Captains take on Ferrum at 2:00pm and Averett at 4:00pm.
