FERRUM, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team opened up USA South action with two convincing wins against Peace and Meredith. The Captains took both matches in three sets and held their opponents to negative hitting percentages.
The Captains started the night a little slow, allowing the Pacers to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first set. But CNU bounced back only allowing three more points in the entire set to take a 25-8 victory. Peace had a little more success in the second set scoring 18 points before the Captains took the set 25-18.
With the score 2-3 in the third set the Captains went on a 13-point scoring run to take a 16-3 lead. The Captains went on for a 25-10 victory to win the match.
The Captains had a team hitting percentage of .439 in the match while holding the Pacers to a -.075.
Bailey Jensen led the Captains with 10 kills with
Cory Harris following with eight.
Jessie Heavenrich totaled 26 assists and also contributed two service aces and three blocks.
The Captains started the match with Meredith in the same way they finished the Peace match winning 25-10. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second and maintained at least a four point lead before finishing the set 25-9. The Captains finished up the night with a 25-14 win the in the third set to win the match 3-0.
Harris led the Captains with 13 kills with
Jessie Kolden getting ten. Heavenrich had 25 assists while
Alyssa Kidd added 13.
Abby Hogge led with 11 digs and Jensen got up for three blocks. The Captains had a team hitting percentage of .409 and held Meredith to a -.060.
The Captains improved to 9-2 with the two wins and return to the court at home on Tuesday, September 20 against N.C. Wesleyan.
