ST. LOUIS, Mo. – On the second day of the WU/Asics National Invitational the Christopher Newport University volleyball blanked Ohio Northern and then fell to #2 Washington University-St. Louis in three sets. The Captains came away from the invitational with three wins and a loss and only dropped four sets.
The first match with Ohio Northern started close with the two teams battling back and forth earning points. But kills by
Cory Harris and
Christie Fellows along with attacking errors by the Polar Bears gave the Captains a five point lead at 15-10. CNU maintained at least a four point lead for the remainder of the match and finished with a 25-16 win.
The Captains limited the Polar Bears to just 17 points in the second match.
Cory Harris had four kills in the set while
Jessie Heavenrich totaled four blocks with two of them being solo blocks.
With the score at 20-15 in the third set the the Polar Bears called their second timeout of the set and followed it with five straight points to tie the match at 20-20. The Captains quickly called a timeout and put three points on the board. The Captains continued for a 25-23 set win with the final point coming from a
Chelsea McClure kill.
Heavenrich had an impressive match with 43 assists along with five blocks and nine digs. Harris led with 10 kills.
Abby Hogge led the Captains defensively with 23 digs.
After three wins in the Captains suffered their first loss of the invitational to #2 Washington University-St. Louis. The Captains jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set with a kill by
Bailey Jensen and three from
Jessie Kolden. The Captains lost their lead at 8-9 and the Bears continued to extend their lead and won the set 25-17.
The Captains battled in the second set maintaining the lead the entire match until the Bears scored four straight points to tie the match at 21-21. The Bears took a one point lead before the kill by Kolden tied the set once again. A service error by the Captains followed by a Bear service ace gave Washington the 24-22 lead. They continued on to take the second set from the Captains 25-23.
The two teams battled back and forth in the third set but the Captains fell 25-20. The loss was just the second of the season for the Captains who are now 7-2.
Kolden averaged 2.85 kills per set for the weekend with 37 total kills to lead the Captains. Heavenrich led the team with 138 assists. Hogge stood out defensively with106 digs for the weekend giving her an average of 8.15 digs per set. Jensen also made an impact defensively with 13 kills averaging one per set.
Heavenrich and Hogge were selected for the All-Tournament team for their efforts this weekend.
