NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University volleyball team opened the 2011 season with a 3-0 win over Hollins University. Five Captains had six or more kills in the match with senior
Chelsea McClure leading the way with eight.

Lindsay Birch said “It was a good opener for us. We were really crisp with our ball control and defense, allowing our offense to attack in-system quite often.” Junior defensive specialist
Abby Hogge led the team in digs with 15 and also added a service ace. Also contributing defensively was senior
Jessie Heavenrich with a solo block, junior
Bailey Jensen with two block assists and junior
Christie Fellows and junior
Cory Harris with one apiece. The Captains held Hollins to a negative hitting percentage.
McClure's eight kills came with only 12 attempts giving her a team high .667 hitting percentage. Harris added seven kills while Fellows, junior
Bailey Jensen and freshman Emily Kohler each had six. Heavenrich dished out 30 assists and two service aces for the Captains.
Senior Simone Mendez, junior Ally Reed and freshman Mandi McDade led Hollins with four kills each while freshman setter Jessie Deese had 13 assists. Reed led defensively with 17 digs.
Set scores for the match were 25-10, 25-12, and 25-11. The Captains maintained the lead in each set but Hollins was able to hang on in the second set staying within six points before the Captains pulled away with seven straight points to take a 21-9 lead. CNU was able to win the set only allowing Hollins three more points. The Captains were up 20-5 in the final set but Hollins scored six more points before the Captains sealed the win 25-11.
The Captains will be tested this weekend as they travel to Haverford, Pa. this weekend to take on #8 California Lutheran, Bluffton, Coast Guard and Stevens Institute in the Haverford College Tournament.
