Schedule Change: Captains Take on Va. Wesleyan Friday

Potential rain moves Thursday's game to Friday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Head coach John Harvell announced a schedule change, as the Captains will no longer face Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday, due to potential rainfall in the area. The game will be played on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Virginia Beach. Christopher Newport is off to the hottest start in program history, winning 16 of their first 17 games, including 15 straight. The Captains road trip across the water will be the second game against the Marlins this season, as CNU dropped Virginia Wesleyan 16-12 in a slugfest earlier this season.
Offensively, the Captains have been on fire to start the season, smacking 16 home runs and hitting over .327 as a team. Matt Shoemaker leads the way, hitting .475 this season with 10 extra-base hits. Shoemaker leads the team in runs scored with 23 and is second in RBI with 22. Connor Madden leads the team in RBI with 28, and is second on the team in hitting, with a .422 average. He's posted a team-high 16 extra-base hits, including four homers.
Virginia Wesleyan is off to a 7-8 start, led by Jacon Pierce and Shayne Paskanik. Pierce leads the team in RBI (14), home runs (5) and runs scored (18), while Paskanik is hitting .407 with a team-high 22 hits.

First pitch will be at 2:30 pm on Friday. The Captains will then return home this weekend for a pair of conference baseball games against Ferrum College.
