NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University improved to 16-1 overall with a 13-3 shelling of Albertus Magnus College (2-3) today. The Captains, ranked 14th in the nation, added to their program-best winning streak with their 15th straight victory.
The Captains jumped on top early, scoring three runs in the first.
Luke Saunders drove in a pair with a double and scored on a
Ben Lenda single as the Captains first four batters reached base.
The Falcons responded in the top of the second, taking advantage of a pair of Captains miscues, scoring two unearned runs with two outs. Malcom Mendez hit a sacrifice fly for Albertus Magnus.
CNU starter
Tyler McElhenny would settle in, facing only more batter than the minimum over the next four innings. McElhenny finished with six innings of action, allowing four hits and two unearned runs. He struck out four Falcons to earn the win, his first of the season.
The Captains added two in the third and then exploded for an eight-run fourth inning.
Connor Madden had a two-RBI double in the inning and Lenda added another RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Albertus Magnus would add one in the top of the eighth for the final score, 13-3.
Saunders and Madden led the way with two hits each. Saunders had three RBI and Madden added a pair.
Matt Shoemaker and
Travis Medina also finished up with multi-hit days.
Kyle Harsanyi came in for one inning of relief, striking out three in his appearance.
Jacob Sullivan closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Christopher Newport returns to action Thursday, across the water vs. Virginia Wesleyan. The game will start at 3:00 pm in Virginia Beach.
