NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Head coach
John Harvell announced a schedule change in this weekend's USA South baseball action against Methodist University (10-4). Due to rain in the forecast Sunday, the Captains (13-1) will play Methodist in a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at Noon.
Christopher Newport is off to the hottest start in program history, winning 13 of their first 14 games, including 12 straight. The Captains are returning off an incredibly successful road trip, winning seven games in six days on the road.
Offensively, the Captains have been on fire to start the season, smacking 15 home runs and hitting over .320 as a team.
Connor Madden and
Drue Vernon have been leading the way for CNU, while
Matt Shoemaker has a hit in 13 of 14 contests.
Methodist has won five straight and will be facing their USA South opening series against the Captains. CNU is 2-0 in league play, dropping Greensboro in a pair last weekend.
The Monarchs are led by Tripp Lancaster, hitting .400 and converting 14-of-15 stolen base attempts. Shawn Lovette and Brandon Thigpen have double-digit RBI through 14 games, with 12 and 11 respectively. On the hill, Methodist has been tremendous, with a team ERA of just 1.96 and three shutouts.
