Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport scored four times in the second inning Friday afternoon and never looked back, cruising to a 12-5 home win over Wisconsin-Platteville. The CNU baseball team is now 22-1 and has won 21 straight games.
The Captains, ranked #9 in the nation, continue to average more than nine runs scored per game. CNU tallied 13 hits and won easily despite committing six errors on the day at Captains Park.
Junior outfielder
Connor Madden (Oak Hill, Va.) blasted his team-leading 7th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Madden finished the day with three hits and four RBI.
Junior second baseman
Matt Shoemaker (Newport News, Va.) also homered leading off the third inning. Shoemaker, CNU's top hitter coming into play with a .452 average, was three-for-five with four runs scored and has now crossed the plate a team-high 31 times in 2011.
Senior
Tyler McElhenny (Lorton, Va.) picked up the win for the Captains to improve to 2-0 this season. Pioneers starter
Shane Murphy, was didn't last through the third inning, took the loss and is now 0-1. Platteville is now 1-6 on the season.
John Harvell's squad has not lost in more than a month. CNU's only defeat this season came on February 15th to Mary Washington, 5-3.
The win was the second this week for the Captains over Wisconsin-Platteville. The teams met on Tuesday at Captains Field with CNU coming from behind to win, 9-4.
Christopher Newport will travel to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to take on North Carolina Wesleyan this weekend. The teams will play USA South Conference games Saturday at 1 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. CNU is 6-0 in conference play so far.
