HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The bats came alive again on Wednesday, as the 9th ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University (21-1) slapped 18 hits including seven extra-base knocks as CNU won 13-3 over Hampden-Sydney College (11-11) on the road. The Captains scored in all but two innings and got rookie Bryan Bierlein his third victory this season.

Bierlein was solid in the start, going seven innings with two strikeouts and three unearned runs allowed. After the bottom of the first, where the Tigers scored two, Bierlein went 1-2-3 in the second, third and fourth innings, and held Hampden-Sydney to just four hits in a six-inning stretch.

Meanwhile, the Captains offense suffered only one hitless inning in the entire game. The Captains jumped out on top for good in the second inning, as an RBI double from rookie Billy Steel scored Steven Keener and a single by Drue Vernon brought in Steel.

CNU would add to the 3-2 lead in the fourth as Vernon was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by a single from Shannon Mark and a two-RBI double from Luke Saunders. In the sixth, three more would score, powered by a Steven Lindemuth RBI double. Vernon continued his hot day with an RBI triple in the seventh, doubled home in the next at-bat by Mark.

In all, the Captains had seven extra-base hits while seven players had multi-hit games. Vernon was 3-for-3 with a walk and two HBP - he scored four times and drove in three. Steel was 3-for-5 and Matt Shoemaker 3-for-6.

Matt Verdillo and Jacob Vaughn locked down the win with a pair of scoreless innings.

CNU returns to action on Friday, March 18 as they play the second game of a series against UW-Platteville at 2:00 pm.
