Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 9th ranked Christopher Newport Captains were staring six outs from their first defeat in exactly a month (L, 3-5 at Mary Washington - 2/15/11), but woke up the bats in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring seven runs to escape the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at home, 9-4. CNU won their 19th straight game to improve to 20-1 overall this season.
The Pioneers jumped on top of CNU, tying the largest lead of the season against the Captains, with a 3-run margin after four and half innings. The Captains answered with one in the bottom half, but UW-Platteville answered in the top of the sixth with one more.
CNU scored seven in the eighth, all earned runs, as the Captains offense scored seven runs on six hits, including a huge two-RBI double from the Captains leading hitter,
Matt Shoemaker, followed immediately by a two-RBI single from DH
Chris McDougal.
