Captains Defeat Ferrum 6-1

Captains scored six runs off 10 hits

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University baseball team improved to 19-1 and 6-0 in USA South play as they defeated Ferrum College 6-1 at Captains Park. Greg Goldsmith earned his fifth win of the year.

The Captains scored first off a solo hom erun by Ben Lenda in the second inning. The Panthers came back in the top of the third to even the score with Paul Jaglowski getting a hit and stealing second. After advancing to third on a sacrifice Jaglowski scored on a fielder's choice.

The Captains put their second run on the board in the fourth. Luke Saunders was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single to center field by Steven Lindemuth scored Saunders to make it 2-1 in favor of the Captains.

The next three innings remained scoreless for both teams. CNU scored four in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-1 lead. Lindemuth, Christopher McDougal and Billy Steel all singled in the inning while Matt Shoemaker had a double.

Goldsmith pitched seven innings as he picked up his fifth win. He allowed five hits and had seven strikeouts. Ryan Fleishman picked up his second save of the season with 1.1 innings pitched.

Lindemuth, Shoemaker and Steel each had two hits. Lindemuth and McDougal each picked up two RBI.

The win improves CNU to 19-1 and 6-0 in USA South conference play and drops Ferrum to 8-9 and 0-4.

The Captains return to action as they host Wisconsin-Platteville on Tuesday, March 15, at 3:00 pm.
