NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport baseball squad blasted six home runs Saturday, beating Ferrum in USA South action, 15-3. The win at Captains Field was the 17th straight for CNU as
John Harvell's squad improved to 18-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.
CNU, ranked #14 in the nation, jumped to an early lead on a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning from
Steven Lindemuth (Burke, Va.). Lindemuth would go three-for-four on the day with four runs scored.
Connor Madden (Oak Hill, Va.) and
Steven Keener (Clifton Forge, Va.) each smacked two home runs in the victory. Madden hit a solo shot in the second and a two-run bomb in the third and was three-for-four on the afternoon. Keener smacked a two-run homer in the third, a three-run blast in the seventh, and then ended the game with an RBI double in the eighth. Keener would end up three-for-five with six RBI in all. The game was stopped in the bottom of the eighth due to the 12-run rule.
Drue Vernon (Stafford, Va.) also homered for the Captains, his first career long ball. His two-run shot came in the seventh inning.
Sean Chitsaz (Burke, Va.) pitched six innings and picked up his fifth win of the season against just one loss. Chitsaz gave up three runs on nine hits and stranded nine Ferrum runners.
Christopher Newport scored 15 runs on 16 hits and eight of the nine Captains in the batting order had at least one hit.
Ferrum scored all of its runs in the top of the sixth as Paul Jaglowski doubled home Daniel Alvarez and then Taryn Hayden singled home Jason Parker and Jaglowski.
Panthers starter Chris Walker took the loss to fall to 1-2 this season.
Ferrum falls to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in the USA South.
CNU has now scored 10 or more runs 11 times in 19 games this season, and in each of the last three wins. The Captains have plated 179 runs this season for an average of 9.4 runs per game.
The teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at Captains Park at 1 pm.
