NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University plays host to important USA South action on Saturday afternoon, as the Captains host the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops at 2 pm and 4 pm. First, the 10th ranked Captains women's team will take the hardwood followed immediately by a pivotal first-place matchup between the Bishops and the Captains men's squad at 4 pm.
The CNU women are 18-2 overall this season and are currently second in league play with a 12-1 mark against USA South competition. The Bishops are 4-15 this season with a 2-11 mark in conference. When the two teams matched up in Rocky Mount earlier this season, CNU came away with a 97-46 victory.
The Captains are led by the nation's leading scorer,
Chelsie Schweers, who is averaging 25.7 points per game and is coming off a career-high performance against Meredith College. Schweers scored 45 points and knocked down 11 3-pointers against the Avenging Angels.
The Bishops are led by Samantha Urquhart, who is averaging 10.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
On the men's side, the game will be an integral factor in deciding seeds for the upcoming conference tournament. NC Wesleyan dropped CNU in a tight battle down in Rocky Mount, 90-86, as the game came down to the final minute. The two teams are tied for second in the league, just a half game behind Ferrum for tops in the USA South.
The Captains have been led by junior guard
Conley Taylor, averaging over 23 points per game, while rookie
Tra Benefield has poured in over 16 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. Senior
Mike Green had his career-best game against the Bishops in the setback, scoring a career-high 33 points and grabbing a career-high 13 boards.
Matt Dougherty ranks third in the league in scoring and had a tremendous game against CNU the first matchup this season. Dougherty scored 31 points, hitting 5 three-pointers and grabbing six rebounds to lead NCWC past the Captains.
