NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a pair of games were rescheduled earlier this week due to weather, the Christopher Newport baseball Captains return to action with a makeup date vs. Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday, February 24 at 2:00 pm. CNU has opened the season 5-1 and are averaging 10 runs per game in the early going.

Head coach John Harvell has the Captains off to a hot start, led by a potent combo up the middle as junior second baseman Matt Shoemaker and freshman shortstop Billy Steel are each hitting over .420 through the first six games. Steel has driven in a team-high 11 and Shoemaker has scored 10 runs so far.

On the hill, CNU has been led by junior Sean Chitsaz, going 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA, while rookie Bryan Bierlein has one win with a 1.29 ERA. Meanwhile, out of the pen, Matt Verdillo has 10 strikeouts and zero walks in 6.1 innings of work.

The Captains will face a Virginia Wesleyan squad that has opened the season 4-2. Shayne Peskanik is hitting .478 with six RBI to lead the offense and the Marlins pitching has allowed fewer than three earned runs per game.
